Friends of the Viking Ship

528 East Side Drive, Geneva, IL 60134

History Museums

In 1893, a replica Gokstad ship named the Viking sailed from Norway to Chicago for the World’s Columbian Exposition. Now preserved in Geneva, visitors can get an up-close look at this remarkable artifact.

Step back in time and experience a piece of maritime history at the Viking Ship in Geneva, Illinois. This remarkable replica of a Viking vessel, once hailed as "the most beautiful ship ever built," sailed 3,674 miles across the Atlantic with a crew of 12 men in just 28 days. Now preserved by dedicated volunteers, the ship offers docent-led tours during Viking Ship Open Days or by appointment, allowing visitors to explore this historic treasure up close. Don't miss the chance to see this unique attraction and learn about its incredible journey and preservation efforts. Visit vikingship.us to learn more and plan your visit.

Friends of the Viking Ship also hosts special events at the Geneva Public Library, as well as a gallery exhibit of Freya—the ornate head and tail of the Viking Ship, an impressive example of Scandinavian craftsmanship. Learn more at https://gpld.org/arts-and-culture.
