The Kincaid Mounds Archaeological Site was a large Native American town occupied from AD1050 to 1450. During this time, a dozen large and many small mounds were built. The site is a National Historic Landmark and Illinois Historic Site.
There will be artifacts on display, information tables, and formal programs offered at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The 10:00 am program will be given by Dr. Paul Welch, retired Chair and Associate Professor of Anthropology Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the 1:00 pm program will be presented by Dr. Brian M. Butler, retired Director of the Center for Archaeological Investigation at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Part of the presentations, which is optional, includes a walking tour to Mound 8; hiking shoes are recommended. The program is free of charge and there will be restroom facilities, but no
refreshments sold.
The Kincaid Mounds Archaeological Site is a series of Mississippian Mounds located in Massac County. The Mounds are an Illinois Historic Site, which is under the management of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The Kincaid Mounds Support Organization works with the Historic Preservation Agency for the preservation and management of the site. This historic site includes the Massac County Mounds with a public observation and interpretation area. Kincaid Mounds are located approximately 10 miles east of Brookport, Illinois, along the Ohio River Scenic Byway.
