Iris and Jack Witkowsky State Wildlife Area
4573 S. Blackjack Rd., Hanover, IL 61041
Bird & Eagle Watching
Iris & Jack Witkowsky State Wildlife Area consists of 1,100 acres of land, offering over 12 miles of hiking trails. This area is the beginning of a transcontinental bluebird trail segment.
The vegetative cover of the preserve is a mixture of timbered slopes with grasslands, row crops, and hay fields predominant on ridge tops and wide valleys. The topography of the region is steep, a result of unglaciated ridges. The area is bordered by private lands with timbered slopes, cultivated valleys and ridge tops.
The habitat provides optimum cover for squirrels, deer, and turkeys. Deer and turkey are abundant in the preserve, providing ideal hunting. Rabbit populations are also optimal in this area. Hunting seasons are posted HERE.
